History of pizza
Pizzas are always associated with Italian cuisine because it originated there. In fact, it is believed that the first pizzas were first made in Naples, Italy. To date, it is still considered as the birthplace of this popular food.
Way back in the 1700s and early 1800s, Naples was seen as a thriving city. Despite its nice location and the fact that it was an independent kingdom, the city somehow faced a problem of overpopulation. Although the city was thriving with its growth, people still badly struggled with poverty.
Aside from shelter, food became another main problem that the citizens had to deal with. With that, Neapolitans had learned to adapt with inexpensive food that can be eaten quickly. This is where pizza began. It was in that food crisis that flatbreads with various toppings were sold in informal restaurants and by street vendors. Usually, the toppings that were used were tomatoes, cheese, oil, anchovies, and garlic.
After Italy unified in 1861, King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited the city in 1889. After being tired from the usual haute cuisine that they are being served with, the royal pair opted for something which is specially served by the locals. There, they were served with a pizza that was topped with soft white cheese, red tomatoes, and green basil. Later on, this pizza variant was called Pizza Margherita.
This paved the way for pizza’s popularity across the globe. Soon enough, immigrants had taken the concept of pizza across different parts of the globe. From Italy, pizza has evolved together with the culture of various countries that made their own twists to the classic food. This is one of the reasons why pizza is really popular today.
How pizza is made
Now that you have learned about how pizza became popular, it is now time for you to know how it is made. Here are some of the steps that are needed in order to make a tasty pizza.
Before anything else, the pizza dough must be prepared because this is where the topping will be placed. Made with yeast, flour and oil, the dough is prepared to match the size and the thickness that is desired for the pizza which is being made.
Aside from the toppings, the dough is considered to be really important as it determines the overall texture of the pizza. There is no perfect way to cook a dough as some customers prefer it to be undercooked, overcooked, or just right.
Each pizza has its own set of unique ingredients. In fact, the distinct taste of each topping contributes well to the overall taste of a pizza. Once combined, a certain flavour is made. With that, here are some of the toppings which you may choose from when you dine here with us at Gigi’s Pizza House.
Considering the fact that we allow you to customize your own pizza, here are the toppings which we had made available aside from tomato sauce and cheese.
Anchovies, bacon, chicken, ham, pepperoni, ground beef, sausage
- Fruits and vegetables
Artichokes, black olives, green olives, green peppers, hot banana peppers, hot chilli flakes, jalapeno peppers, red peppers, mushrooms, onions, pineapple, chopped tomatoes
Feta cheese, fresh garlic, extra cheese
Once the dough has been made and the toppings have already been placed on top, then it’s time to finally cook the pizza. This is the final step in pizza making and this is where the magic happens.
Different restaurants have different ways of how they cook their pizzas. Here are the two most popular methods on how pizza is cooked.
Brick oven method
Traditional pizza makers make use of a brick oven. In this method, the pizza is placed inside a brick oven that is being fired upon by gas, wood, or coal. Most pizza makers prefer this method because of the fact that it contains heat very well.
With the fact that heat is very well contained, it is expected that pizza made in this method is evenly cooked. Also, since the heat is also evenly distributed, it is expected that the flavours here are well-released.
Also known as northern-style, the pizzas cooked in this method are well characterized by thicker crusts. Usually, these pizzas are also the ones which are more overloaded with toppings. Usually, pizzas that are being made in this method are usually cooked in electric ovens and the like.
This method is usually preferred by modern pizza makers as they consider it to be cleaner than the other method. This may be because of the fact that the pizzas being made are in no way exposed to the particles that are being emitted by the fire source in the traditional one.
